Focus on Fonts | SIgnarama San Diego (Kearny Mesa), CA

You have hundreds of fonts at your disposal when you start thinking about sign design, but it’s best to stick with simpler fonts that are easy to read from a distance.

Is bigger always better? It depends on the distance from which you want people to be able to read the sign. The United States Sign Council suggests the following sizes, based on maximum readable distance and best impact:

What fonts are used most often? The top 10, as voted by designers, are:

  1. Helvetica
  2. Futura
  3. Grammond
  4. Bodoni
  5. Frutiger
  6. Trajan Bold
  7. Myriad
  8. Minion
  9. Bembo
  10. Baskerville

If you take a jaunt around Google to see what these fonts look like, you’ll find they are quite simple.
There’s no such thing as style points when it comes to signage; using intricate fonts because they
“look cool” will usually lower readability and thus not create the result you intended.

We suggest limiting yourself to using one or two fonts per sign. Choosing two fonts that are complementary can enhance your message, but if you use more than that, you run the risk of creating a sign that looks busy or messy, certainly not your goal.

Lucky for you, you don’t have to make font decisions alone. At Signarama—Kearny Mesa, we will work with you to determine which font(s) will work best for your sign and suggest how big the letters should be. We’re a font of information!
