Professional Versus Amateur
Sometime during your life, it’s likely you’ve made a sign. During your elementary school years, you might have used notebook paper and crayons to create a “No girls allowed” sign to post at the entrance to your tree house. As you got a little older, you likely graduated to using poster board and markers, perhaps to make signs cheering on your high school or college teams.
Those labors certainly got the job done for you, but of course they can comfortably be considered amateur efforts. Once you become an adult and enter the business world, handmade simply won’t do; your signs need to be professionally created to ensure they properly reflect your non-amateur status.
Here are a few things to think about the next time you are tasked with creating a sign:
- Choose color combinations carefully to ensure they’re easy on the eyes and they won’t blend together. Some good options are yellow and black, yellow and green, and white with any dark color, e.g., red, blue, black, etc.).
- Think outside the box by not always choosing to create square signs. Let your design’s intended concept dictate the right shape, e.g., if you have long rows of copy, a rectangular sign might be the way to go.
- Be simple, yet bold. Limit your copy to only what needs to be there, but also take advantage of the space you have to make a strong statement.
