The ABCs of Monument Signs

Once you decide to erect a monument sign to drive customers to your business, you face a number of important decisions that will significantly affect how much “bang you get for your buck.” You need to make smart choices regarding three design elements: visibility, legibility and readability.

Visibility, as you would expect, relates to whether the sign can be seen. Size is certainly one thing to be concerned about, but you also need to focus on shape, color and location.

Legibility relates to whether you can clearly recognize all the letters used on your sign, while readability, its “cousin,” has a bit broader interpretation. If you’ve ever felt like you were straining your eyes while trying to read a monument sign, odds are that a hard-to- read font was used, the letters aren’t the right size or spaced correctly, or the colors are in conflict.

The bottom line is rather simple: you want people to be able to see your monument sign, and clearly be able to read the information contained on it. Achieving that is not quite as simple as it might seem…unless you work with a sign profession who has the knowledge and experience to guide your decision-making process.
